you can't. Try this:
dir c:\windows | more
the "| more" does the trick nicely.
try:
dir /p
the "/p" causes a pause after each screenful

One very nice trick I have learned, is to output the scroll to a text file.
For example...
dir c:\*.* > c:\windows\desktop\output.txt
creates a text file "output.txt" containing the list of all files on the root directory.
